A few days ago 53 pilot whales stranded at Farewell Spit on the south island of NZ, beaches where literally thousands of pilots have stRanded in recent decades, and the vast majority of them 'euthanized' by gunshot to the head by DOC, numbering in the thousands.
This time was different, however; a great old mate of mine, Sue Grey, well-known lawyer, micro-biologist, environmental and political activist, and like myself, an overall 'stirrer', was able to respond to my alert that the whales were lying on the beach. She subsequently was on the road within an hour, and spent the next four days camping in her van at Farewell and being out with the whales and fellow rescue responders, enduring 100 km/hr winds, chilly temps, being waist-deep in water half the time, acting as EMT and photo-journalist, and being up close intimately with whales for the first time ever...fellow beings who truly ARE from a different world...on this planet. I told Sue that her life would never be the same, and was I right?
Just take a look at what's happening right now: her video she posted two days ago has been seen by tens of thousands of people. The video is an impassioned plea for enlightened awareness and treatment of not only pilot whales, but all sea-life and life in general, who is suffering in '100% Clean and Green New Zealand' as I write this, most notably the critically endangered Maui's dolphins. Sue talks about how the last group of whales returned repeatedly to the site where a dead baby lay, in order to be and grieve with their whole family unit.
This last group of pilots trying to achieve closure just as humans would do were shot in the head by DOC.
Sue's presence throughout this episode was instrumental in forestalling what surely would have a much earlier 'euthanasia' process, as rarely before has DOC attempted 4 re-stranding efforts. Nor has Project Jonah.
Central to an enlightened perspective on who whales and dolphins actually are is that they are not 'beautiful creatures' or 'majestic animals'...this way of thinking relegates them to theoretically expendable natural resources; they very much ARE people of the sea. I call them the 'ultimate indigenous people.'
If we witnessed dozens of human people washing up on a beach, imagine how different the response would be: there'd be no shortage of emergency boats, choppers, planes, medical help from over-seas, every single individual cared for at whatever level it might take to return them to well-being.
Would any human people ever be euthanized? Would survivors be allowed to be with, to grieve with their dead families, in peace?
Sue and I are recording a new interview today, and together we're forging ahead with a 'new paradigm' of whale and dolphin consciousness not only for New Zealand but for the entire world.
