SPACESHIP EARTH

"We travel together, passengers on a little spaceship, dependent upon its vulnerable reserves of air and soil, all committed for our safety to its security and peace; preserved from annihilation only by the care, the work, and, I will say, the love we give our fragile craft. We cannot maintain it half fortunate, half miserable, half confident, half despairing, half slave to the ancient enemies of man, half free in a liberation of resources undreamed of until this day. No craft, no crew can travel safely with such vast contradictions. On their resolution depends the survival of us all."

Greetings from Yunbenun, Dream-time, Mother Earth. I recorded this radio broadcast on the beach and in the ocean at Rocky Bay here on Magnetic Island Qld. This posting is not the long-overdue comprehensive article on the health and life of Mother Ocean that is in progress, but to honour several 'kaitiakis moana' ('kaitiaki' means 'guardian' in Maori, and 'moana' is the Maori as well as Hawai'ian word for ocean) who have done and/or are doing some of the highest quality and most relevant work on behalf of life in and of the ocean.

Many thanks to my wonderful friend, talented musician and writer Jaiia Earthschild of Hobart, Tasmania, for letting me borrow her sweet little video camera for the last few months. Bless you my friend and I look forward to hearing your new song dedicated to the Great Barrier Reef.

GREAT BARRIER REEF

Where I am now is right on the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest reef system, home to myriad life-forms and under attack from a full-spectrum assault of human activities, in particular, microwave radiation from growing undersea warfare operations moving from the northern hemisphere to the EEZ's of Australia and New Zealand; electromagnetic radiation from ship hulls electrified to prevent corrosion that causes shipping lanes to become charged conduits; vast chemical toxicity from agricultural run-off; and the spectrum of problems associated with the massive coal export industry based in this area, in particular, the highly controversial Adani coal mine project in the Galilee basin which, if constructed, will be the largest ore loading facility on the planet.

ABBOTT POINT QUEENSLAND

Another big threat to Mother Ocean scheduled to rear its head this year is the world's first deep sea-bed mining project, set to take place in Papua New Guinea. It's ironic that the United Nations is making such a stir about protecting the ocean while at the same time their International Seabed Authority has handed out thousands of permits for digging out minerals from all over the world's ocean floors. To imagine how vast and how destructive this is, visualize an entire new mining industry that will dwarf that which exists already, all underwater and largely performed by automated drone technology, the original patents for which are owned by Lockheed.

DEEP SEABED MINING SET TO BEGIN

THOMAS GOLD

American astronomer at Cornell University, gave Carl Sagan his first job. A brilliant mind who addressed complex problems in a variety of scientific disciplines, over-turning many apple-carts but coming up with almost exclusively accurate analyses. Of great interest is his book 'The Deep Hot Biosphere' about subterranean microbial life and their relationship with surface and benthic life-forms, as well as their relation to hydro-carbons, which he deems to be abiogenic.

DR. ROGER PAYNE

Co-founder of Ocean Alliance and along with fellow researcher and musician Scott MacVay, the first humans to describe humpback whale sound as 'songs', a huge stride towards our understanding of them as fellow beings. Has published many books and worked tirelessly for health of Mother Ocean.

DR. IAIN KERR

Co-founder of Ocean Alliance and owner/skipper of the Odyssey, OA's research yacht, whose biggest accomplishments include the completion of a five-year survey of global ocean toxicity (2005-2010) and two studies of the Gulf of Mexico in the wake of the BP Macondo disaster. Currently heading up 'snot-bot' research using drones to collect mucous from whale exhalations to be analyzed for hormone properties to determine stress levels in response to seismic testing and other anthropogenic intrusions.

DR. JOHN WISE, genetic toxicologist who has worked extensively with OA

DR. SYLVIA EARLE

Legendary oceanographic researcher and educational activist. Founder of Mission Blue but best known to me for her brilliant article on why she is a vegetarian and has been for decades, and why we should not be eating anything that comes from the ocean.

"...you know people say 'I'm a vegetarian, I just eat fish, no meat.' And I can see the fish being really offended: 'What do you mean. I'm a piece of meat! I have muscle, I have a heart, I have a brain.' We have this attitude of fish as somehow just commodities."

WALLY and TRISH FRANKLIN

A highly dedicated couple who have been working with and on behalf of eastern Australian humpbacks for many decades. Founders of the Oceania Project. They both became Ph.D.'s recently.

JACQUES COUSTEAU

He is probably the mac daddy of all modern-day oceanographers. His decades of films and television shows showed the beauty and wonders of Mother Ocean to countless people spanning several generations. He was the co-inventor of the SCUBA system for breathing underwater. His ship Calypso sailed the seven seas in search of all things wet and beautiful. Musician John Denver wrote a song and made a lovely video in her honour.

'AYE CALYPSO' by JOHN DENVER

SIR PETER BLAKE

New Zealand America's cup winning yacht skipper who went on to dedicate his life to studying and remedying ecological devastation around the world. He was killed by 'hooded river pirates' while engaged in a sting operation with a Greenpeace vessel in the mouth of the Amazon, to try to catch the people illegally logging mahogany in that area. He had bought a specially designed research boat designed and built for Jacques Cousteau that had a retractable keel so that it could navigate shallow waters. Definitely NOT a 'reality-tv' kind of guy. I think he would scoff at much of what passes for 'ocean activism' these days.

STRANDED NO MORE

A coalition of marine biologists currently based in Hawai'i, SNM is tops when it comes to reporting on cetacean reality, in particular, stranding events as they unfold globally and correlating them with the proximity of anthropogenic influences like seismic testing, military 'war games' or hazardous operations, rocket launches, weapons testing, you name it. They also cover the full spectrum failure of the western cetacean rescue operations in general. They produce a wealth of fantastic information including high resolution graphics that convey the stories at hand. Their web-site is currently under re-development but will hopefully be back on-line soon.

DOUGLAS 'DOLPHINUS' WEBSTER

I'd like to thank Dolphinus for being such a fantastic person, lover of cetaceans and supporter of my work. He has hosted my web-site on his for almost a decade now. He works with Joan Ocean in Hawai'i and takes people out to swim with dolphins and be close to humpback whales regularly. Lately they have been battling the bureaucracy who wanted to terminate their dolphin swimming, but have so far been unsuccessful. GO DOLPHINUS :)

GLENN EDNEY

Glenn is a wonderful kiwi who I met last year. He and his wife Janey have published a great book entitled 'The Ocean is Alive' and are currently working on the problem of plastic pollution in the ocean, as well as various community educational projects. Glenn is an avid diver and under-water photographer as well, and has a profound empathy with all things and beings aquatic.

TERRY 'MR. LIMPETT' LILLEY and STEWART 'THE EFFECT' SIMONSON

MR. LIMPETT

BLEACHED SEA TURTLES

Terry Lilley might quality as the best 'kaitiaki moana' I know of in the world of today. He is a marine biologist, educator, activist and under-water photographer with more hours of underwater video than any other civilian person. Based in Kauai, Hawai'i, he has been documenting the sea-life there for decades and in recent years the immense damage wrought on the coral reefs by the U.S. military's PMRF (Pacific Missile Range Facility) on the north shore, whose microwave emanations destroyed much of the reefs in that area. He has worked closely with Atlanta-based chemical engineer and fellow diver Stewart 'The Effect' Simonson, who has been researching the damage done to marine life by electromagnetic emanations coming from cathodic protection systems that electrify the hulls of all larger vessels. Terry and Stewart are perhaps the only 'kaitiakis moana' I know other than myself who are willing and able to confront the exponential lethality of the military-industrial juggernaut tentacle to tentacle.

RACHEL CARSON

My very favourite human being of all time and the kaitiakiest of 'kaitiakis moana', Rachel Carson was a uniquely talented woman, lover of life, nature and the sea, as well as insightful scientist and author of exquisite literally ability as well as having a profound empathy with life in the sea. Her first three books were dedicated to the ocean and her life (Under the Sea Wind, The Sea Around Us, and The Edge of the Sea). Her fourth book, Silent Spring, catapulted her into international limelight conveying an urgent message not only about chemical toxicity but also about the grave dangers of humanity's careless and destructive deployment of ever more lethal technologies.

EXCELLENT DOCUMENTARY ON RACHEL CARSON,
HER LIFE AND WORK

NOTES ON RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION OF GLOBAL OCEAN

This is a very hot topic that has been swept under the plutonium-soaked rug for many years, a very real and perhaps the GREATEST SINGLE THREAT to life as we know her, eclipsed on the public radar by concocted bogeys like 'climate change' and the 'war on terrorism.'

Only embedded and inter-generational scientific ignorance coupled with a predilection for the irrelevant bordering on psychopathology have allowed the onslaught of global radiological contamination to continue with practically zero attention from the average person. This is one of the greatest ironies and contradictions of being here now on Mother Earth.

In the wake of Fukushima, global radiation contamination continues...not continued... to sky-rocket far beyond comprehensible levels. U.S. Navy/mainstream 'science' minions like Woods Hole researcher Dr. Ken Buessler assure us that any ionizing radiation present in the ocean is at 'safe levels.' But this is a total lie.

"Yes, it's there but it's SAFE."

The REAL STORY of the health effects of ionizing radiation is told by real life-loving scientists/researchers like the late Dr. Rosalie Bertell:
DR. ROSALIE BERTELL

"There is no safe level of exposure to ionizing radiation, and the search for quantifying such a safe level is in vain."

OUR MUTAGENIC FUTURE

TO SUM UP: Mother Ocean is home to the vast majority of life on Mother Earth yet is under an exponentially growing full spectrum attack by 'man, the wise' with his military-industrial juggernauts, out of control technologies, off the rail behavioural patterns, and the species megalomania that allows him to refer to Mother Ocean as 'OUR ocean' or Mother Earth as 'OUR planet.' We hope and dream that beings of the sea may someday 'talk' to us while totally failing to LISTEN to their often silent voices sharing what they think and feel and their unique perspectives on being here now, perspectives and 'cosmologies', if unwritten, equally if not more valid than anything on which we congratulate ourselves. Many lovely people care immensely, but the irony is that our quests to 'save' this and 'conserve' are often leading to even more intrusion and destruction.

Where DO we go from here? Outer space? I don't think so...

Why can't we just step back from the brink, ask ourselves not what Mothers Ocean and Earth can do for us, but what we can do or stop going on their behalf?  Why can't we just learn to

LIVE SIMPLY SO THAT OTHERS MAY SIMPLY LIVE?
