SPACESHIP EARTH

"We travel together, passengers on a little spaceship, dependent upon its vulnerable reserves of air and soil, all committed for our safety to its security and peace; preserved from annihilation only by the care, the work, and, I will say, the love we give our fragile craft. We cannot maintain it half fortunate, half miserable, half confident, half despairing, half slave to the ancient enemies of man, half free in a liberation of resources undreamed of until this day. No craft, no crew can travel safely with such vast contradictions. On their resolution depends the survival of us all."

INTERVIEW WITH BUNNA LAWRIE, 'ON THE BRINK' RADIO WITH JEFF WEFFERSON, 17 OCTOBER 2015 (ucy.tv)

"In several previous worlds the majority have advanced their technology in this way, even beyond what we know today. The consequent violations against nature and fellow humans caused severe imbalances which were resolved in the form of war, social disintegration and natural catastrophe. As each world reached the brink of annihilation, there remained a small minority who had managed to live in nearly complete accord with the infinite plan, as implied in the name, Hopi. Toward the final stages they would find themselves beset with signs of disintegration within, as well as enticing offers and severe threats from without, aimed toward forcing them to join the rest of the world."

from 'DANCING AWAKE THE FIFTH WORLD'

Many thanks to Mirning whale-dreaming elder, musician and environmental activist Bunna Lawrie, whose real first name is Ngumbunna, their name for the sperm whale!  I first learned of Bunna in the Kim Kindersley film ‘Whale-dreamers’ that came out in 2007. The Mirning are First Nations Australians who live on the coast of South Australia and are uniquely both desert and ocean people with an extraordinary whale-dreaming-centred cosmology.

This is an absolutely fantastic interview in that it’s with someone who is simultaneously indigenous Australian, deeply connected with his ancestry, the cetaceans and Mother Earth, who is keenly aware of and sensitive to the war being waged against nature by military-industrial civilization, AND, most importantly, is taking a stand and speaking out against ‘big oil’ juggernauts like BP and in favour of our true role as care-takers of our fellow beings and this planet.

Bunna was in Canberra for two days earlier this week to create awareness of and to share the story of his people who are the traditional owners/custodians of the Great Australian Bight, a vast region of the south coast where brilliant white sand dunes drop away into cliffs hundreds of meters above 'bilya', the ocean. The bight is one of the largest and most important whale birthing grounds/nurseries on the planet.

In this interview Bunna bears witness to the dangers posed by BP’s proposed extraction of hydro-carbons in the Bight, and reminds us of the still-unhealed Gulf of Mexico debacle from 2010…also a BP project. An event/process like the Macondo scenario would be disastrous for alllife in a vast region of the Southern ocean, but chronic effects from seismic testing, hydro-carbon extraction and shipping, and vastly increased noise, pollution and traffic would prove equally deadly to marine life in the longer run.

Bunna shares his song ‘Face into the Light’ on this show, then we talk about environmental, social and spiritual issues and problems in Australia, focusing on his people and land. He emphasizes, just as Stella Wheildon did, that many if not all ‘aboriginal land councils’ consist of ‘fake elders’ who have been bought out by various interest groups and who benefit financially from doing their bidding, at the expense of the real people and Mother Earth.

Many of his ideas and beliefs parallel those of the Hopi native Americans, whose prophecies as conveyed in the brilliant Ron Fricke film ‘Koyaanisqatsi’ have come to pass in our generation. I found it very interesting when Bunna said that his grand-father told him that humans are releasing ‘demons’ when they extract anything from the Earth…precisely as the Hopi warned, ‘If we dig precious things from the land, we will invite disaster.’

In the spirit of Chief Seattle, Bunna repeatedly delivered an admonition:  our true purpose as human beings is to love and care for Mother Earth and our family of life. Our failure to do so puts all of life at risk.

He also shared a repeating dream that he had several times, of trying ever harder to escape a giant blue-green tidal wave that engulfed even the mountain peaks where he was living at the time in the Wollumbin (Mt. Warning) caldera near Mullumbimby. These dreams motivated him to move away from the east coast of Australia…a region prophesied to be destroyed by a tidal wave in ancient aboriginal lore as well as in the powerful 1976 Peter Weir film ‘The Last Wave’.

Along the lines of what Stella Wheildon shared, Bunna relates that burndilya, or comets, asteroids and meteors are often the bringers of gooleagulra, or healing and medicine for Mother Earth.
I think it’s going to take a massive burndilya to heal the effects of human military-industrial civilization, as we continue to demonstrate that we have no intention of lifting our pedal from the metal.

ADANI CARMICHAEL:  AUSTRALIA'S LARGEST COAL MINE FREE TO PROCEED AFTER GREG HUNT GIVES APPROVAL

BP OIL SPILL IN BIGHT WOULD BE CASTROPHIC

"We don't need a Gulf of Mexico disaster in the Great Australian Bight," he said. "The waters are more treacherous and more remote."
BP and its partner, Statoil of Norway, want to use the A$755 million rig Ocean Great White to drill the first exploration well next year about 300 kilometres off the coast, south-west of Ceduna.

'THE WHALE-SONG MAN, THE OIL GIANT AND THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN BIGHT'

"Oil company executives rhapsodise about the Great Australian Bight's potential as a last frontier containing massive reserves of what romanticists used to call black gold.  Bunna Lawrie speaks of the place in the poetry of a people who have lived at the edge of that frontier for maybe 50,000 years.

"I"m the whale song man from the Nullarbor on the Great Australian Bight," says Lawrie, who prefers to be called Bunna. "The Great Australian Bight is the greatest whale nursery on this planet. The whale story where I come from is my university, my school. It's the place where our beautiful southern right whales come to calve their young, to teach their young to travel on the next journey...Whales like sperm whales, blue whales, pygmy blue whales, killer whales, humpback whales – they travel down there to honour that great journey, that song, that story of the great white whale Jeedara that is there now."

'BIG OIL' DESTROYS THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN BIGHT

WHALE-SONG PEOPLE STAND IN THE WAY OF OIL GIANTS

" Mirning people’s struggle has been relentless despite the betrayal of expectations from their presumption of Native Title rights and despite the power and influence that comes with the billions of dollars of the multinationals. The Mirning have refused to accept they are powerless...Australia has not been spared from environmental disasters such as that in the Gulf of Mexico – the 74 day Montara oil disaster took a huge toll off the Kimberley coast and will still be felt by the Timorese long into the future."

OCEAN ALLIANCE: GULF OF MEXICO STATUS REPORT
On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded resulting in an uncontrolled release of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Superimposed on the threat of the oil, is the nearly two million gallons of toxic chemical dispersants that British Petroleum (BP) released into the Gulf to try and break up the oil. These chemicals have been used in unprecedented amounts and in untested ways.
THREATS TO MARINE MAMMALS

One major concern is the impact of this crisis on wildlife in the Gulf of Mexico. Marine mammals are a particular concern because they serve as sentinels for human health and because they are key species for both the ocean ecosystem and coastal economies. Marine mammals are at risk in this crisis.

The effects of dispersants on whales are unknown and have not been studied. They have also never been released into the environment in such massive quantities.

HOPI PROPHECY

The Day of Purification
"The final stage, called the 'great day of purification,' has also been described as a 'mystery egg,' in which the forces of the swastika and the sun, plus a third force symbolized by the color red, culminate either in total rebirth, or total annihilation – we don’t yet know which, but the choice is ours. War and natural catastrophe may be involved. The degree of violence will be determined by the degree of inequity caused among the peoples of the world and in the balance of nature. In this crisis, rich and poor will be forced to struggle as equals to survive.
That it will be very violent is now almost taken for granted among traditional Hopi, but man may still lessen the violence by correcting his treatment of nature and fellow man. Ancient spiritually-based communities, such as the Hopi, must especially be preserved and not forced to abandon their wise way of life and the natural resources they have vowed to protect.
The Fate of Mankind
The Hopi play a key role in the survival of the human race, through their vital communion with the unseen forces that hold nature in balance, as an example of a practical alternative to the suicidal man-made system, and as a fulcrum of world events. The pattern is simple. 'The whole world will shake and turn red and turn against those who are hindering the Hopi.'
The man-made system now destroying Hopi is deeply involved in similar violations throughout the world. The devastating reversal predicted in the prophecies is part of the natural order. If those who thrive from that system, its money and its laws, can manage to stop it from destroying Hopi, then many may be able to survive the day of purification and enter a new age of peace. But if no one is left to continue the Hopi Way, then the hope for such an age is in vain.
The forces we must face are formidable, but the only alternative is annihilation. Still the man-made system cannot be corrected by any means that requires one’s will to be forced upon another, for that is the source of the problem. If people are to correct themselves and their leaders, the gulf between the two must disappear. To accomplish this one can only rely on the energy of truth itself.
The approach, which is the foundation of the Hopi way of life, is the greatest challenge a mortal can face. Few are likely to accept it. But once peace is established on this basis, and our original way of life is allowed to flourish, we will be able to use our inventive capacity wisely, to encourage rather than threaten life, and benefit everyone rather than giving advantage to a few at the expense of others. Concern for all living things will far surpass personal concerns, bringing greater happiness than could formerly be realized. Then all living things shall enjoy lasting harmony.
In several previous worlds the majority have advanced their technology in this way, even beyond what we know today.
